Why Your Realtor’s Contractor Network Matters When You Own a Desert Home
A Realtor’s value should extend beyond the transaction. Learn how a trusted network of contractors, appliance technicians and home-service professionals can make owning a seasonal or full-time desert home easier.
Buying a desert home is only the beginning. Whether the property is your primary residence, seasonal retreat or vacation home, keeping it running smoothly requires reliable contractors, responsive service professionals and someone local who knows whom to call. Watch the video below to see what happened when I discovered a client’s failed Sub-Zero freezer—and why your Realtor’s contractor network matters: Click Here.
A Routine Visit—and a Very Unpleasant Surprise
I recently stopped by a client’s home to bring in their mail while they were away for the summer. As soon as I entered the house, I was hit by an overwhelming smell.
It was so bad that, for a moment, I genuinely worried something terrible had happened inside the home.
Fortunately, the source was not a person. The client’s Sub-Zero freezer had failed—and it was full of meat.
A failed freezer is unpleasant under any circumstances. When it happens inside an unoccupied desert home during the summer, however, it can quickly become a much larger problem. Spoiled food, lingering odors, pest activity and damage to surrounding surfaces are all possible if the failure goes unnoticed.
Because I have trusted tradespeople for nearly every type of home repair, I knew exactly whom to call. My appliance technician came to the property, identified the issue and got to work.
The Maintenance Issue That Can Lead to Appliance Failure
The likely culprit was dust buildup around the freezer’s condenser.
Refrigerator and freezer condensers need airflow to release heat. When dust, pet hair and debris accumulate around the condenser coils and fins, the appliance has to work harder. That extra heat and strain can reduce efficiency and eventually contribute to a breakdown.
This is especially important in the Coachella Valley, where dust is a constant part of desert living and summer temperatures place additional demands on appliances and mechanical systems.
A useful seasonal maintenance habit is to inspect and carefully vacuum the condenser area when closing your desert home at the end of the season and again when reopening it. The fins can be delicate, so avoid bending or damaging them. If you are uncertain about the correct procedure for your appliance, call a qualified technician.
A few minutes of preventive maintenance could help you avoid a costly repair—and a house that smells like something died inside it.
A Good Realtor Is More Than a Transactional Resource
Many people think a Realtor’s job ends when the sale closes. I see it differently.
My clients regularly need help finding dependable professionals for appliance repairs, general contracting, remodeling, painting, plumbing, electrical work, landscaping, pool service and other aspects of desert homeownership.
Finding a contractor online is easy. Knowing whether that person is responsive, trustworthy and capable of delivering quality work is much harder.
An experienced local Realtor can provide valuable connections because we work with these professionals repeatedly. We see how they communicate, how they handle problems and how their work holds up over time.
That established contractor network can be particularly valuable for second-home owners who may be hundreds or thousands of miles away when an issue arises.
Helping Clients Renovate and Maintain Their Desert Homes
I am constantly involved in renovation and improvement projects for my clients. Sometimes that means helping a buyer understand what is possible before purchasing a property. In other cases, it means connecting an owner with the right contractor, appliance specialist or tradesperson after the transaction has closed.
My network includes professionals who can help with:
- General contracting and home renovations
- Kitchen and bathroom remodeling
- Appliance repair and maintenance
- Plumbing and electrical work
- Painting and flooring
- Landscaping, pools and outdoor living areas
- Heating and air-conditioning service
- Seasonal property maintenance
- Preparing a home for sale
- Resolving unexpected problems while an owner is away
The right professionals can protect a home’s condition, preserve its value and make owning it far more enjoyable.
An Ongoing Resource for Desert Homeowners
Luxury real estate service should not stop when the keys are handed over.
When clients work with me, they gain an ongoing local resource for the realities of owning, maintaining and improving a home in La Quinta, Indian Wells and throughout the Coachella Valley.
That may mean recommending a contractor for a major renovation. It may mean finding an appliance technician during an emergency. Sometimes, it simply means noticing a problem before it becomes a disaster.
Buying or selling the property may begin our relationship, but it does not have to end it. My goal is to remain a trusted resource for everything that comes with owning a desert home—long after closing.
